Self-service
Kiosk

A self-service kiosk must explain every choice, react to physical input, and recover without staff instruction.

Role

Research, interaction design, colour guidance, recovery design, and quality review.

Product

Volanté self-service ordering across kiosk, mobile, and web.

Team and period

Shared work with Inaia Silva and the product team, 2022 to 2026.

Status

High contrast and feedback improvements released. Other flows reached handoff.

One setup, every channel

Design the menu once.

Restaurant teams first arrange item groups and menu tiles in Backoffice. The same structure then supports point-of-sale terminals, self-service kiosks, and ordering by phone or web.

  1. Group similar items in Backoffice.
  2. Arrange the menu once.
  3. Reuse that structure across service channels.
  4. Keep Back and Home behavior clear in single-site and multi-site menus.

This shared model reduces repeated setup while each channel keeps the interaction pattern it needs.

Accessible ordering

Make readability a system rule.

Accessibility settings must work through the full ordering journey. I owned the colour guide and shared theme work with Inaia Silva.

The high-contrast theme uses the existing theme switch and replaces local menu colours. It reached release as a delivered accessibility feature.

Test one control deeply

Eight versions, printed and tested on the kiosk.

The quantity selector began with five concepts. We refined them into eight options, printed each one, and placed them on the real kiosk hardware.

Each participant received the same neutral scenario. They reviewed the options at their own pace and voted privately.

  1. Combine the votes and take the strongest three forward.
  2. Review those three with the product team.
  3. Run one more vote and select the winner.
  4. Write the behavior rules before handoff.

The selector appears only when the required minimum is more than one. A second tile tap does not deselect the item. Nutrition always describes one unit, while quantity changes stay in the main selector.

Hardware recovery

Tell the person what to do next.

The weight-scale flow had unclear prompts, an unlabeled refresh action, and an error state that did not recover automatically.

I designed guided states for placing food, lifting it, holding still, capturing the weight, and handling temporary or persistent faults.

The sequence connects each physical action to visible feedback. The redesigned flow reached engineering handoff.

Production quality

Review behavior as well as appearance.

After a product demonstration, I reported a parent issue and 19 related defects. They covered cart states, quantity behavior, input spacing, prices, and feedback.

Sixteen related defects reached completion. Later releases added improved scanning and messages that respond to payment context.

My role continued after handoff: record each mismatch, connect it to the intended behavior, and check the correction.
